We received one of those dreaded middle of the night phone calls last night. Actually, it went to my DSS's phone because it involved a friend of his.
My step-DIL has a foster family that she is very close to. In fact, they live right next door to her and the teenage DD's babysit my step-grandchildren all the time. My DSS has gotten close to them too and took one of the DD's, Allison, to his prom 2 years ago.
Yesterday, the other DD, Amanda, was killed in a car accident. She was shoved into a power pole and they had to turn off the electricity to get her out but she died instantly...we are thankful for that. She was just 18 and was taking college classes while working.
Amanda was so sweet, caring, intelligent and well grounded. This is a huge loss for this family. And this is the first huge loss they've suffered. Allison and Amanda came home from the movies when they were about 8 and 10 to find that their mother had passed away. It's taken years for them to come to terms with this and their Dad hasn't always handled it well. He's been in AA now and doing well so it seemed like life was finally getting back on track for the family but now they've lost Amanda.
My step-grandchildren were with the father when the police came to the door to tell him about Amanda. I guess he did what any of us would do and totally lost it. It scared Anthony, Ashley and Breanna and they are devastated because Amanda was like an older sister to them all.
I've never seen my DSS so devastated either. He's been crying and is heartbroken. I know losses like this happen but it's hard to help a teenager cope with losing someone their age who was a good friend. My DH has taken my DSS out for the day to help him keep busy but this is just a tough one that's going to take a lot for everyone to get thru.
Please pray for Amanda's family, for my DIL and SIL and my step-grandchildren and as well as my DSS. They are all hurting from losing Amanda. I can't even imagine how terrible this has to be for her family.
Thank you for your prayers. It's all any of us can really do at this time.
