I have a pack of chalks but I've never used them before. I wanted to try my hand at them. I'm wondering if there's any tips that you guys can give me. It says for best results to use the applicators inside (these look like eyeshadow applictors) or that cotton balls would make a nice effect. I'm open to all suggestions since this is completely new to me.

I'd like to hear tips too... I NEVER use chalk though I have a ton of it. When I try to use it, it doesn't turn out that good!!!

Someone on the MMM board was descibing how she prints photos in black and white on matte paper or cardstock and uses the chalks to give a handcoloring look - i have used them to shade paper piecings and edges of journalling blocks. You can also use stencils with them to make background papers. Also, you can stamp with versamark ink and rub chalk over the image to color it you can also use them like watercolors paints and wet them with a brush to us them like paints, which looks nice on a stamped card they also are good for highlighting any texture at all - say you have embossed areas on cardstock - rubbing a little chalk ovr them will make them stand out more. hope all this helps! michelle

WOW!! Great suggestions! Thanks so much. I want to try them on my flowers...I think I might try that tonight. Also...do you know if they will stay on metal? I have Fastenater staples that I've been trying to find a way to color but everything I use rubs off.

Nicole, I think the only way you will get chalks to stick to those staples is if you coat them with something else first. Metal is pretty "slippery" - ther is no pores or anything for the chalk to settle into or stick to. Chalk needs something with teeth - something it can grab onto - like paper or fabric. Try coating the staples with gel medium or spray adhesive, and see if that works. (jeez am i a scrap dork or what? lol! i need to get a life!!!) hth - michelle

Please don't get a life cause then I wouldn't have anyone to answer my questions...lol I don't have either of those things so can't try them. What if I spraypainted them one color and then rubbed the chalk or any other kind of ink over top of the embossed area???

Well, I did some playing and it's going to take some practice! lol But it was fun experimenting. My favorite was when I used it on some blank chipboard. That looked really neat.
